Other travelers cross the bridge and arrive at the teahouse. On the other end of the bridge are the steep roofs of other buildings along the bare shore of the river. This is the first version of two that was published by both Hoeido and Senkakudo, in this print the man dismounts the horse rather than mounting it.

This is the second of the two versions of this print and it was only published by Hoeido. The most significant difference is the man mounting the horse rather than dismounting.

They headed towards a village hidden in the tree in the upper left of the image. The rain here is created by a veil of fine lines creating the illusion of hs rushing down toward the ground.

Travelers walk the path covering them selves in various pieces of protective clothing and head toward the village just beyond the crest of the hill in the center of the image. The roofs of the nearby village can bee seen past the hill.

The crossroad of the main thoroughfare of Hiraga village is marked by the gate of Ise Shrine is rendered in a soft pink that matches the blooming cherry blossoms beyond the gate in the background. Travelers enter the shrine grounds and stop at the nearby shops that are selling stuffed rice buns which is the area’s specialty food.

A strong wind blows through the scene, shown by the branches of the tree and the travelers struggling with their hats and cloaks.

The village can be seen by the roofs just beyond the crest of the bridge. Behind the village is a large grove of trees that rise above the rooftops. On the bridge are several pilgrims, men and women. One of the men with his back to us is carrying a Tengu mask on his back. The Tengu is a spirit in Japanese folklore that lives in the deep mountain forests and possesses great power; humans sometimes seek out the Tengu to learn magic from them.

Two peasants are kneeled to the side to let the procession pass and to show their respect to the feudal lord. Cargo ships large and small fill the Toyo river below. The towers of the castle can be seen rising from the mist and trees in the distance.

In a parade scene, viewers watch on either side of the road as the parade leaders, musicians, and ceremonial riders enter from the bottom right-hand corner. According to the title, this is the Tenno Festival which is an annual festival in the Aichi region dedicated to the deity Gozu Tenno, the God of plague, pestilence, and health. In the current day, Gozu Tenno has been amalgamated with the deity Susanoo, the god of sea and storms.

There is a noblewoman in a veil on horseback, two other women traveling on foot, and two men with a child. Down in the water small boats carrying goods dock along the banks of the river. Down the river on the opposite shore the towers of the nearby castle rise above the tree line.

This is set against the backdrop of a dominating Fuji with clouds drifting around the base and a line of plovers fly across its face. The archive’s print features the striations at the top of Fuji rendered in blue, other versions have these striations in gray.
