Schaufelberger was assassinated days later near the Central American University in San Salvador, El Salvador on May 25, 1983. Schaufelberger was the senior U.S. Naval representative and security chief for the 55 U.S. Military Advisors in the country. He was the first U.S. serviceman killed in the twelve-year armed conflict.
