- Letter from John Peate to Samuel Beiler, 1895 April 05
- Date
- 1895-04-05
- Creator
- Peate, John, 1820-1903
- Description
- In this letter, Peate has returned from his time in Florida and notes that work has begun with casting material for the telescope. Although there is no way of telling at this point whether it will prove a success, Peate assures that if these preliminary steps fail the company will examine it and try again. Peate mentions that he has written a "special letter" to his friend Richard Brown in the hopes of receiving a donation, and goes on to discuss the mechanics of drafting advertisements and announcements for telescope via newspaper. Finally, Peate moves to the matter of bill payment, asking Beiler for $200 payment to avoid going into debt, as he did when Beiler was previously late with payments.

- Date
- 1895-04-13
- Creator
- Peate, John, 1820-1903
- Description
- In this letter, Peate insists that he must abide by his and Beiler's payment agreement dating to the previous September, and that he cannot work any further until the appropriate payments have been made. He mentions that Richard Brown has written him concerning the telescope, and while unable to make a donation at this time intends to do so should he acquire the appropriate funds. Peate encloses the latest pay statement, asking Beiler to return it to him, as he saves and files them all to avoid future issues, and again reminds Beiler of the unpaid dues owed to Peate and his laborers.
