On the left side is the shrine building at the center is the fountain where visitors would clean their hands before prayer. Farther to the right a trip of people can be seen enjoying a meal on a raised platform, they are likely there to view the full moon. Hirota Shrine is mentioned in the Nihon Shoki (The Chronicles of Japan) as one of the shrines the sun goddess Amaterasu tasked the empress consort with building. In the 11th century, it was designated as one of the Nijuni-sha, the 22 most important shrine recognized by the imperial clan.
