- Creator
- Utagawa Hiroshige/ 歌川広重 (Signature: Hiroshige ga/ 広重画)
- Description
- Nishiki-e (Multicolored Print), ink and color on paper. Large trees and groups of travelers serve to frame the main subject of the scene. At the center is the famous Night-weeping Stone. According to legend, a pregnant woman was killed by bandits, and her blood fell on the stone. Since that day, the stone cries in the night for her. The barely legible writing etched into the stone likely says “Namu Amida Butsu” (Veneration to the Buddha Amitabha.) The focus on the stone seems to be the reason for a comparatively less picturesque landscape rendered for the background.
