Nishiki-e (Multicolored print), ink and color on paper. Residents of Edo mingle on the open lawn surrounded by pines and cherry blossoms on Asuka hill. Just past the park is the shops of Edo and Mt. Fuji framed by the trees in the foreground. The compsoition is divided by the gradient blue sky and the vibrant green grass. The smooth contour of the hill seperates the two sections. Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune planted cherry blossoms and opened the hill for the citizen of Edo. Later in 1873 Asuka would become one of the first public parks established in Meiji Japan. Nishiki-e (Multicolored Print), ink and color on paper. A sheer cliff face topped with pine trees in the foreground creates an immediate and strong composition. This monolith feature creates a doorway to view the bay leading to the shore of Honmoku where cherry blossoms can be seen blooming in a bright patch of pink at the base of Mt. Fuji. Fuji is stark white outlined by a fukibokashi gradient of red. Site located in Honmoku, Naka, Yokohama.
Nishiki-e (Multicolored Print), ink and color on paper. Three women pass under the torii gate of Enoshima shrine on Enoshima island, a popular tourist spot even today. The three women are dressed in matching Yukata likely provided by the inn they are staying in. The building just off to the left could be said inn. Out in the water, boats ferry people between Enoshima and the mainland. In the distance Fuji sits framed by the torii gate. Site located in Fujisawa, Kanagawa.
Nishiki-e (Mutlicolored Print), ink and color on paper. In the foreground the path of the Tokaido road lined with pine trees cuts into the lower right corner. Two figures, a woman and a monk, walk the road. The monk looks out to the left at the figures working in the rice fields as well as Mt. Fuji just beyond them. The tokaido road was one of major roads that lead out of the city of Edo. Tokaido ran between Edo and Kyoto and was a common subject of print series. Site located in Yodabashi, Fuji, Shizuoka.
Nishiki-e (Multicolored Print), ink and color on paper. Front and center is Meoto Iwa or the “Wedded Rocks”. The rock formation features two bright red torii gates and a series of shimenawa ropes connecting them. These rocks are worshiped as representations of the Shinto creator gods Izanagi (larger rock–husband) and Izanami (smaller rock–wife). They are surrounded by small dynamic waves circling the many smaller rock formations. Out across the water Fuji can be seen against a red backdrop. Site located in Ise, Mie.

A cliff side topped with grass and pine trees hangs over a seaside path filled with travelers. Choppy waves break against the rock shore in the foregorund. The white sails of boats are seen in the distance. Site located in Kyonan, Chiba.
Nishiki-e (Multicolored print), ink and color on paper. The print depicts the Ichikoku bridge in Edo. Four or five citizens populate the bridge. Behind it are the city walls and other bridges crisscossing the river. The city fades into a hazy mist that leads up to Mt. Fuji in the upper left of the print. Fuji is balanced out by a willow tree on the right peeking into frame in the extreme foreground. Fukibokashi ink laying technique is used to create gradients in the sky and water. Site located in Yaesu, Chuo, Tokyo.
Nishiki-e (Multicolred Print), ink and color on paper. A wide river cuts through Inume or Dog's eye Pass. Travelers dot the steep cliffside paths. Pines and Japanese maple trees grow off the sides of the cliff faces. A mist accented in a purple-gray hovers over the pass and divides the foreground and background spaces. Mt. Fuji off to the far left with a line of birds flying across the face of the mountain. Site located in Uenohara, Yamanashi.
Nishiki-e (Multicolored Print), ink and color on paper. Fuji can be seen just beyond a waterfall in the Izu mountains. On either side of the river figures make the trek along the steep mountain trails carrying heavy packs on their backs. They are dwarfed by the surrounding hill tops. The peaks of the green hills are accented by gradients of dark blue-green. Site located in Izu, Shizuoka.

Two horses graze amongst the field and get water from the small creek in the foreground. Site located in Matsudo, Chiba.
Nishiki-e (Multicolored print), ink and color on paper. Hiroshige demonstrates his bold compositinal style with the large cropped tree trunk in the foreground of the scene. The tree goes beyond he limits of the frame the split through the trunk creates a peephole frame of the summit of Mt. Fuji. At the base of the tree and river runs back into the scene and is lined with blooming trees. Site located in Koganei, Tokyo.

In the foreground, a lush green bank frames the bay. A fish eye effect is created by the rounded horizon where Fuji is located. Site located in Kisarazu, Chiba.
Nishiki-e (Multicolored Print), ink and color on paper. Depicted is Lake Ashinoko that sits at the base of Mt. Hakone which is part of the same mountain system as Fuji. The lake in the foreground is divided by a grassy island with rocky shores. Mountainous terrain in the background leads back to Fuji which is surrounded by white clouds or mist. Fuji is larger and more immediate in this print than the prior scene in the series. Site located in Hakone, Kanagawa.

A building (maybe a temple) sits among the cherry blossoms on the left bank. A line of fishermen's boats wind down the lake coming in and out of the frame of the print. The composition leads he eye back to the central point where Fuji sits on the horizon. Site located in Suwa, Nagano.

Cherry blossoms peek out from down the hillside and a large evergreen tree divides the center of the composition. A torii gate to a nearby shrine is at the right side of the print. Fuji is slightly obscured by the large tree on the otherside of Kurudo Bay. Site located in Kimitsu, Chiba.
Nishiki-e (Multicolored Print), ink and color on paper. A bridge sits high above the Kaneda river as small boats filled with cargo pass underneath. The area is refered to as Ochanomizu meaning "tea water" in reference to a story of the Shogun making his tea from the water of the river. Pine trees line the hill bordering the river on the left. Gradient is used to create variety in the green hills and Fuji peaks through the trees. Site is located in Surugadai, Chiyoda, Bunkyo, Tokyo.

Large, single mast sail boats fill the waters around Tsukuda island. Around them smaller boats carrying fishermen mingle. The gradient blues of the foreground water are echoed in the blue gradient of the sky. Site located in Tsukuda, Chuo, Tokyo.
Nishiki-e (multicolored Print), ink and color on paper. Travelers cross the Oi River on their journey along the Tokaido road. Wealthy travelers are carried atop sedan chairs carried by porters and some are even carried on the shoulders of porters to stay dry. At the forefront a wealthy woman dressed in layered fabrics comes in from the left. To her right, two other women ride a slightly less elaborate sedan chair. The line of travelers continues back to the opposite bank of the river. Fuji rises just above the line of the foothills perfectly aligned with the end of the procession of river crossers. Site located in Shimada, Shizuoka.

The perspective of the image makes the plant life look as if they dwarf the mountain in the background. The winding stream leading back into the composition is mirrored by the line of birds flying over the mountain. Site located in Otsuki, Yamanashi.
