A crowd of visitors and residents of the red-light district move from the gate on the right side of the image to the main road that opens up on the left. Amongst the crowd are several women dressed in clothing typical of sex workers, and the corner of a lattice front viewing room can be seen on the left side. All of this helps indicate the setting in the red-light district.

The focus of the image is the three kites flying high above the fields that look large in comparison to the distant landscape. Their tethering ropes lead off the frame and their positioning creates a sense of depth in the scene as they decrease in size the farther, they are placed back.
