Hannah Brenchley Interview, September 12, 2021

Okay. So when we first moved to Adams Morgan a couple of years ago, the first thing that our landlord told us about our apartment is that it was like where some people from the Weather Underground had lived, and so that of course led me to do a bunch of googling. He had made jokes that there was a chance the FBI, you know still had the place wired. So be careful what we say, you know, all of that. And that had pushed me to like do some research about Lanier Place and Adams Morgan in general. And like I learned a lot about The Black Panther presence here and the Weather Underground presence here.

And in doing that searching, I found out that Cathy Wilkerson, who was at the time, like one of the leaders of the Weather Underground did, in fact, live in our row house and like I had known that I was kind of funny like see our address like on pages like listed about her and that was fun. And then actually only recently like probably four months ago, I went and bought the like Adams Morgan history book from one of the local CVSs'. It's like a tourist guide that shows some photos of before and after. And one of the pages was about the 1960s and the Weather Underground and it had a story about Lanier Place and how Cathy Wilkerson had been chased, like, from her apartment on the rooftops, by the FBI, like after the Weather Underground bombing attempt back in the 1960s and like it all came together. I'm like, she must have run, like, up our building and across our roof, like, anyways, so, that was the fun then and now story about Adams Morgan.
