- Coffee For Export In Antigua, Guatemala
- Date
- 1981-12-01
- Creator
- Nickelsberg, Robert
- Description
- A Guatemalan laborer loads dried green coffee beans for export at a coffee plantation in Antigua, Guatemala, December 1, 1981. Coffee was developed as an export crop in Guatemala during the 19th century. Labor relations in the coffee sector reflect larger conflicts within the country, namely unequal land distribution, racism, and poverty. Coffee is Guatemala's largest export, with over half of annual yields exported to the United States. In recent years low coffee prices have forced thousands of farmers to emigrate to Mexico and the U.S.
