- Artesian Water
- Date
- 1969
- Creator
- Rude, Ronald
- Description
- Artesian water has made the Terai Nepal’s bread basket. The constant availability of water allows for growing wheat during the dry season. Here we see water bubbling out of a patch of sand on its own. These wet patches were not that common but by simply driving a pipe a few feet into the ground water would flow. It was always cool and clean and the runoff was captured in nearby pools which were great for fish cultivation.

- District Ag Office
- Date
- 1968
- Creator
- Rude, Ronald
- Description
- This building was our District Ag Development Office as well as the home of our District Director. I assume he had a family, but they were not with him here. We traveled by bus to this office every few months to discuss agricultural projects. It looks shabby but was a sound brick building.

- Fish Project 2
- Date
- 1970
- Creator
- Rude, Ronald
- Description
- B.N. Jha holds up a prize Israeli carp harvested from the Megraul pond. Israeli carp grew very fast so fish this size could be harvested in a few months. They required no additional feeding and were a great new source of protein.

- Fish Project I
- Date
- 1970
- Creator
- Rude, Ronald
- Description
- My source of Israeli carp fingerlings was quite near me. An hour walk and a two hour train ride would bring me to Janakpur where the Nepalese government had developed a fisheries station. Here PCV Frank Daly and I are receiving our supply of fingerlings which we delivered to landlords who had ordered them. Small, muddy village ponds were fine for cultivating these fish. A plastic bag was placed in a mustard oil tin. Water and fingerlings were poured into the bag. The bag was tied shut with plenty of air left at the top. We took the tins by bicycle rickshaw to the train station. We rode the train to the train station closest to our village and with some luck rendezvoused with an oxcart to travel the rest of the distance. The fingerlings were then poured into their respective ponds.

- Hauling Rice Straw
- Date
- 1969
- Creator

- Description
- This Tharu worker is transporting rice from the threshing floor by bell gari (ox cart). He has his lungi (skirt) bundled up around him. He has stopped in front of the landlord’s house. With its wooden second floor, it is quite fancy for the Terai.

- Hog Project
- Date
- 1971
- Creator
- Rude, Ronald
- Description
- In animal husbandry, raising hogs was by far the biggest challenge. They were considered a dirty animal and could be kept only by untouchables for the landlords who purchased them. Also, the piglets had to be brought from Biratnager, a day’s trip east by train. I had many interesting experiences transporting and working with hogs. While they were a temporary success, I doubt they had much of a permanent impact as I am sure fish and chickens did.

- Plowing Demo
- Date
- 1968
- Creator
- Rude, Ronald
- Description
- Between crops of rice and wheat, the ground had to be plowed. This simple plow could be pulled by either a man or an ox. Wheat was a new crop for the people of the Terai in 1968. It doubled production in fields where before only rice was grown. Plowing became more important.

- Poultry Project
- Date
- 1970
- Creator
- Rude, Ronald
- Description
- New Hampshire chicks were available at the agricultural development farm in Parwanipur. Acquiring and raising chickens for egg production was more problematic than our fish project but could be done with some effort. Parwanipur was a day away by either train or tractor and wagon so picking up chicks was often a three- day project. Furthermore, the chickens needed to be vaccinated and the medicine, brought down from Kathmandu, kept cold in thermoses with dry ice. Yet the projects were successful, and the result was hundreds of healthy chickens and thousands of eggs. Later we tried a white leghorn variety of egg layers.

- Rabbit Project
- Date
- 1970
- Creator
- Rude, Ronald
- Description
- We learned that rabbits were available at the prison in Kathmandu. With two does and one buck, I started a prolific rabbit population. Through my stay in Nepal, the rabbits were mostly being kept as pets. Some villagers were suspicious that they were a type of rat and off limits as food for anyone except Musahars and other untouchables. My hope was that they, too, would become a source of protein. Their initial value to us was that through their sale we were able to provide cash prizes for our coming agricultural fair.

- Rice Harvest I
- Date
- 1969
- Creator
- Rude, Ronald
- Description
- Both women and men, mostly Tharu, eagerly join in the rice harvest. The rice is cut with a hard sickly and a bundle is bound with a length of straw. By this time poor families are desperate for food and may be down to rice or wheat chaff for their meals. Rice harvest is typically late October and into November.

- Rice Ready to Harvest
- Date
- 1969
- Creator
- Rude, Ronald
- Description
- Rice has long been a staple crop of Nepal and is grown during the hot, wet summer season. The Green Revolution brought fertilizers and new, high producing glutenous types of rice which increased production greatly on the Terai (Nepal’s southern plain). If the new glutenous types of rice were not needed for food locally, they were the first sent to market.

- Row Planting Of Wheat
- Date
- 1968
- Creator
- Rude, Ronald
- Description
- Row planting was a new technique for these farmers who had been used to the broadcasting of rice seed only. Rice seed was broadcast and the seedlings were transplanted in rows in flooded fields. Once plowed, this rice field is planted with wheat during the fall, the cool and dry season. Small furrows are made and seed is dropped into them by hand.

- Straw Stack Near Pond
- Date
- 1969
- Creator
- Rude, Ronald
- Description
- Straw is piled in stacks at the edge of the town and used, in addition to grasses, to feed oxen and cows. It is also used for small fires in the cool season, November to February. It is common during these months to see workers squatting and warming their hands in a circle around a straw fire. Straw is also used by the poor for cremation.
